Posts and Pages

As you can see the structure of your blog is similar to our chocolate site.

Both of them include the index/home, about and contact pages.

In WordPress, Pages are better suited for more timeless content that you want to be easily accessible

Posts are content entries listed in reverse chronological order on your blog’s home/index page. Due to their reverse chronological order, your posts are meant to be timely. Older posts are archived based on month and year.

Page vs Post

Posts and categories

Let's say that in this choco - blog -site we want to blog about choco- recipes.  We have to create a category of these posts. We will name this category "Recipes".

We will add a menu item named Recipes and we will add the recipes on this page.

1st step: Add new post-recipe and create the category

As you can see the new posts are appeared by default on the Homepage

2nd step: Display the category in the navigation bar

In the video, we showed how we separated the posts included in the category Recipes, from other posts. We have also grouped these posts under the category- menu item Recipes

Custom home page

It's time to change our home page, we don't want to have as home page the default of WordPress because this page is just a generic blogs listing of all post's categories.

We will create a Welcome page for our visitors.

If we want, we can transfer the content of default generic page to a different location.

1st step

We will create two temporary new pages, the Welcome page, and a Blog page.

2nd step

We will set the Welcome Page as the Homepage of our site

3rd step

We will complete the Welcome page.

In this page we will add:

    • text
    • Internal links
    • image (imported as media)

(pay attention to the way we will use to add the link to the category Recipes)

Enrich your posts or pages

We will see different tools to enrich the appearance of our posts or pages:

Featured images

WordPress has Featured images to associate an image with a post. WordPress will create a one-to-one relationship between a post and its image.

The Read more link

This tag allows you to display an initial amount of information. If your visitor is intrigued by this information, he can click on the link, the featured image or on the title to read more. Note that the url doesn't change when we click "Continue reading".

The excerpt text

The excerpt text is your chance to provide a catchy part of the post, to catch people's eyes in order to get their attention to the post

Optional exercise

Optional Exercise

You would create a custom Homepage with any content you like (possibly a short description about you and about the purpose of your site - blog)

You would also create one or more categories of posts and show them in the Navigation bar.
