Is choosing the wrong kitchen contractor a costly long term mistake?

I keep going back and forth on whether to start my kitchen renovation now or wait another year, mostly because I’m worried about choosing the wrong contractor and being stuck with problems I’ll regret for a long time. This isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about functionality, durability, and whether the work is actually done properly behind the walls.

Red Stone Contracting is one of the companies I’ve shortlisted, but I’m still trying to understand what really separates a good contractor from a bad one when you’re just a homeowner with limited technical knowledge. For people who’ve gone through this, what questions did you ask that actually revealed how competent and honest a contractor was? Did they walk you through their process in detail, or was everything vague until you signed?

I’m also unsure about how much protection a contract really offers. If something goes wrong months after completion, like cabinets sagging or plumbing issues, how easy is it to get the contractor back to fix it? Do most reputable companies provide a clear warranty, or is that something you need to negotiate for  kitchen renovation?

Another thing I’m concerned about is future resale value. Did your renovation actually add value to your home, or did you later realize some design choices were too personal or impractical?

Mostly I’m trying to avoid making decisions based purely on price or nice photos, and instead understand what leads to long-term satisfaction rather than short-term excitement.
