I’ve been getting back into horror games recently, and it made me realize that “scary” can mean very different things depending on the game. Some games rely heavily on jumpscares, while others barely show anything and instead create a constant feeling that something is wrong. Personally, I find the second type much more effective. A dark hallway, strange sounds coming from another room, or an enemy that you know is somewhere nearby can make me more nervous than a sudden jumpscare.
I’m curious what scary games have actually made you uncomfortable while playing. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a famous title like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. I’d actually prefer recommendations for lesser-known horror games that people might not hear about very often.
I’m also interested in different types of horror. Survival horror, psychological horror, creature-based games, found-footage-style games, and even short indie horror games are all welcome. Multiplayer horror is interesting too, especially when playing with friends somehow makes things even more chaotic.
Another thing I’m looking for is a game where exploration actually feels dangerous. I like having to search rooms, solve small puzzles, find items, or figure out where to go while knowing that something could appear at any moment. Games where you can’t simply fight everything are especially good at creating tension.
So, what’s the one scary game you would recommend to someone who wants to be genuinely frightened? And what made it scary for you—the atmosphere, enemies, story, sound design, jumpscares, or simply the feeling of being completely helpless?
