Hi everyone.

I need some realistic advice regarding my uncle's recent financial nightmare. He unfortunately got tangled up in a sophisticated online romance scam and lost a significant portion of his retirement savings.

He’s heartbroken, but today he told me he found a company online promising they can track down the scammers and claw the money back. I'm incredibly skeptical because it sounds way too good to be true, and I don't want him getting double-scammed.

You have every right to be skeptical. The sad truth is that the vast majority of companies online claiming they can recover scammed crypto or wire transfers are actually "recovery scammers" themselves.

They prey on people who are already desperate, charge a massive upfront fee, and then disappear or make up excuses about why they need more money for "taxes" or "software."

A real investigation usually has to go through law enforcement or certified forensic accountants, not a random website with flashy reviews.

I went through this exact same thing with my mom last year. Please tell your uncle not to pay anyone anything upfront.

Legitimate firms do exist, but they typically work alongside law enforcement or legal teams, and they will give a realistic assessment rather than promising a 100% guarantee.

Your best first step is filing a report with the IC3 (if you are in the US) or your local cybercrime unit. Be very wary of anyone in your direct messages right now recommending specific fraud recovery experts.
