Phospholipids are main components of the cellular membrane with characteristics of excellent biocompatibility and especial amphiphilicity. When introduced into aqueous milieu, the amphiphilic phospholipids self-assembly generates different structures depending on their properties, for example, bilayers, micelles, and liposomes. The molecule structure of phospholipid consists of a hydrophilic head group and hydrophobic acyl chains linked to the alcohol. The variation in head groups, acyl chains, and alcohols lead to a variety of phospholipids with different shape and charge, which provides various options for phospholipid-based drug delivery.
